TELLURIDE, Colo., June 11 /PRNewswire/ — Delta Air Lines will expand its winter Atlanta non-stop service to Montrose/Telluride from Saturday only to daily service beginning December 18, 2010. The Atlanta to Montrose/Telluride daily non-stop service will run until April 3, 2011. Service will be provided on a CRJ900 76 seat regional jet (64 Coach and 12 First Class Seats) and on a 142 seat MD90 aircraft.

“We’re pleased that Delta will be serving the Montrose/Telluride area on a daily basis this coming winter,” said Dave Riley, CEO of Telluride Ski Resort. “Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world and with Delta being the dominant hub carrier at that airport, effective service from and through Atlanta provides better access for our skiing guests in the east, and particularly Atlanta the southeastern part of the United States.”

“Delta continues to grow our hub in Atlanta with the daily seasonal to Montrose/Telluride,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s managing director – Schedule Planning. ”Our Montrose/Telluride customers have one-stop access from our eastern hub to 227 destinations across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.”

“The expanded daily Atlanta winter service will also offer great connections for international guests,” states Scott Stewart, Executive Director of the Telluride Montrose Regional Air Organization. “Convenient one change of plane connections to Montrose/Telluride from Mexico and Central and South America in particular will be available via Delta’s Atlanta Hub and the expanded daily Atlanta to Montrose/Telluride Flight!”

Spent several days in September in Telluride, CO– my original Colorado stomping grounds. I first espied Mount Wilson and the rugged mountain vistas of Telluride in December of 1972, the area’s first year of operation as a ski area. Every time I return I’m inevitably struck by the majesty of the San Juan mountains.

Morning Sun on Mount Wilson

The morning of the above photo followed an uncomfortably cold night of camping at Telluride’s elevation: nearly 9000 feet above sea level. Wonderfully refreshing in the summer, but challenging by mid-September. All in all, a pointed reminder of why humans have invested such an immense degree of effort globally to create good shelter. Without warmth, food and water one’s existence quickly becomes devoted to finding all three. The sad part is once we manage to secure those essential creature comforts, we seem marvelously inventive at identifying other unmet needs and wants. We should all sit in front of a hypnotic campfire and count our blessings far more often!

I recently spent the first two weeks of September in southwestern Colorado. Was reminded of how utterly glorious summer in the San Juan Mountains can be. And for much of the season prior to my visit, the area received above average rainfall, so the high country was particularly verdant.

Low-hanging rain clouds over Vallecito River

In addition to photographing virtually all of the businesses of Telluride for our inaugural iPhone travel app, I spent considerable time camping and hanging with friends in Lake Vallecito. Played tennis almost daily in scenic Durango and worked on my friend’s updated mountain cabin. Nothing like foraging through the high country with a couple of fellow man-apes! To my surprise I even chanced upon some edible wild mushrooms that I was accustomed to picking in Connecticut with my Italian uncle. They were found along a small mountain stream at about 8000 feet elevation. And they were picked and ten minutes later saute-ing gracefully in a pan of olive oil and garlic. Great Vallecito appetizer!
